switching to *actually* clean skincare

I’ve been on the “mostly” clean skincare bandwagon for quite a while now, oscillating between DIY & buying a couple products when my acne would flare up. But I’ve been leaning towards a cleaner skincare regime for a while now.
As I’ve been diving deeper into herbs, I really want to incorporate them into my every day life as much as possible. Skincare is a perfect starting point, as I’ve been holding myself accountable to do some self care every night in the form of skincare.
This truly does make a big difference, both physically as well as energetically. The act of caring for my body and treating her as the goddess that she is has made a difference in my outer world as well.
It’s boosted my confidence and gotten me out of the motherhood funk of putting everyone else’s needs above my own.
the plan
Face wash
One word: yogurt. I’m taking a page out of Marie Veronique’s book and going with a nightly yogurt wash. Sure, it probably sounds absolutely bonkers to some folks, but it actually isn’t that far out of the ordinary for me. I’ve done face masks with ingredients some people probably wouldn’t dare to put on their face, but truly being able to eat what I put on my skin is really important to me.
I’ll say this til I’m blue in the face, but our skin is our largest organ and I’m extremely conscious of what’s touching it. After all, it quite literally soaks directly into our bloodstream. So while I’m far from perfect, I’m still going to do what I can to take steps towards a cleaner lifestyle when it comes to skin health.
Toner
I plan on DIY-ing this, with herbs front and center here. I’m thinking chamomile, calendula, rose, and rose hips. Mainly because I already have all of these herbs in my apothecary. As far as other ingredients go, I’m thinking I’ll add witch hazel as well as some aloe Vera spray, again because I have all of these ingredients in my bathroom cupboard. Always use what you have first, friends. I’ll fill this into a spray bottle (again, since I already have one. Sense a theme here?) and spritz my face right before applying my moisturizer.
Moisturizer
Oil! Some people still aren’t on the oil game, and I totally get it. I was absolutely terrified of it for quite some time, especially since I have combination skin to begin with. Combination skin essentially means it can go from dry to oily and back to dry at the drop of a hat, sometimes even both at once. But I’ve had really good results with using oil on my skin despite that, so we’re going for it. Also because I’m sick of purchasing expensive products with “water” as one of the first ingredients. And herbs infuse well in oil, so I get the oil benefits as well as the herbal benefits. I’d say it’s a win-win.
That’s really all there is to it! I don’t wear makeup, so I don’t need to worry about a super powerful cleanser (although even if you do wear makeup, I’d argue that this routine would be just fine). Of course, I can only speak from my experience so I’ll be sure and keep y’all updated on the journey as well as share specific recipes once they’re ready. If you give any of this a try, be sure and let me know. I’d love to hear the results!
all my love,
Kaitlyn
